Hirdaramani is a global sustainable apparel manufacturer based in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Vietnam and Ethiopia. They are one of the largest suppliers for Levi Strauss & Co and have additional plants that manufacture for brands including Hugo Boss Everlane, and Patagonia. With carbon neutral factories and chemical sustainability priorities, Hirdaramani is committed to creating a better future by respecting the planet and inspiring people to live healthy and fulfilling lives.

When we take a chemical in, we consider all parameters and give priority to Screened Chemistry certified products. Both plants are aligned with Levi Strauss & Co regulations for chemical compliance. As LS&Co requires Screened Chemistry, all of our products are aligned with the Screened Chemistry program. Subscribers who become Screened Chemistry certified can use the SciveraLENS dashboard to see their score and see what chemicals are holding their score back or preventing them from getting Screened Chemistry. Then they can use this information to reformulate effectively in order to sell more successfully to us and to other manufacturers.

So how does the Screened Chemistry process work? As a first step, Hirdaramani compares the chemicals used in supplier products to extensive restricted substances lists (RSLs) that restrict hazardous chemicals. This can be done at the touch of a button in SciveraLENS. If the chemical is compliant, and there are no regulated or restricted substances, chemical suppliers begin the chemical hazard assessment process and scoring for Screened Chemistry. Once this process is completed, chemical suppliers will receive Screened Chemistry certification. Hirdaramani encourages suppliers to get the Screened Chemistry certification because it allows them to design, create, and sell their products in a more sustainable manner.

It’s a mandatory requirement from our buyers that products have Screened Chemistry certification. Screened Chemistry is a deeper screening beyond the RSL. With this deeper screening, you can identify those compounds or chemicals that may be added to an RSL in the future. Without this,if chemicals are banned, you would have to phase out those chemicals and reformulate with more sustainable chemicals which—even though it is more helpful for the environment—it costs a lot of time and money for the supplier. We can reduce that cost because the Screened Chemistry process is more sustainable

When deeper screening is incorporated as a part of the development process, it can lead to higher sales and better business. Prescreening in SciveraLENS and Screened Chemistry certification are significant contributors to future product development and provides an increased level of confidence that problematic chemicals aren’t introduced into products. Hirdaramani’s goal is to use this information so safer chemical decisions can be made and support their suppliers in the process.

Knowing what’s not in your product is not the same as knowing what’s in your products. Screened Chemistry represents the next level of practice if we’re going to be successful in protecting the environment.
